In the hands of Shawn Wahlberg, metal is transformed into beasts real and imagined: an elegant sea horse, toothy, scowling fish, cruising for prey; a double-headed sea dragon of gleaming steel.

Sculpture requires more craft, planning and labor than two-dimensional media, yet his creatures, fully realized in three dimensions, have the lightness and apparent spontaneity of drawings. There is humor in them, but also menace; power, yet tranquility. Their lines have the "just-so" quality of Zen, and show a sense of design that immediately engages the viewer.
